First adventure out

We had another sleepless night; this time change really makes it hard. I went to bed around 10:45ish and woke up at 4...by the time I fell back asleep it was probably around 8am if not later. We ended up watching the "Raisins" episode of South Park at 6am since neither of us could sleep ... apparently South Park Studios is one of the only websites where you can watch streaming videos in India. ABC.com, Hulu, NBC, Netflix and any other site you can think of doesn't work here - something to do with international copyright laws and you can only watch the programs online from the States. Super annoying but I'm trying to figure out a way around it...

So yesterday (Sunday) was the first time we left the hotel since we arrived. After being in the room all day Saturday sleeping and having nothing to do on Sunday, we decided to bust out. I needed to get a mobile phone, just something cheap and prepaid so I can make calls locally to T's office and the hotel if we're out, etc. We talked to the front desk to figure out where we could get one, and if one of the drivers could take us there and wait outside the store. The main reason we were worried about leaving the hotel before T got his work cell was that we wouldn't be able to call the hotel and tell them when to come back and get us, so we felt better knowing there were parking spaces outside the phone store and the driver would just wait.

We headed outside of the complex and within a couple of minutes saw some pretty crazy stuff. Cows and goats walking in the street, people living in tents and shacks on the side of the road...you hear/see about these things on TV or in movies but it's an entirely different experience to witness in person. It was a very small area of the road that had the tents but it was still really sad. Further along the traffic got busier and it was kinda scary. Driving at 4am is a TOTALLY diff situation since there aren't many cars. During the day there are people everywhere, especially on scooters and auto rickshaws and none of them really look where they're going. People use their horn every 2 seconds and I had to shut my eyes a few times!

We got to the store and picked out a really basic phone for me...the guys who worked there were really hard to understand and I think we didn't make it clear enough what we wanted, because when we left and got back to the hotel to set up my phone we realized there was no SIM card. So yeah, I can't use it at all and now we need to go back, ugh.

The rest of the day was uneventful, we hung out in the room playing online, Skyping with family/friends and watching the India vs. England game of the Cricket World Cup. We went to the hotel bar for dinner and ended up having a good (but Americanized) meal. I had fries (which were awesome, btw) and a grilled panini with tomato, pesto and mozz and T had a chicken club sandwich. We tried Kingfisher, the popular beer here. It's actually pretty good. There were a bunch of Americans sitting at the bar and I wondered if they worked at T's office. It will be nice when we actually know people here and make some friends who can kind of show us the ropes. After dinner we heard some noise outside and realized they were setting off fireworks. No clue why, but it was cool. I hadn't brought my camera down to dinner, so didn't get any pics.

Today was T's first day at work so I am in the hotel doing work (writing some wedding planning articles and editing a writer friend's manuscript) and watching Bollywood music videos. Learning some awesome dance moves - haha. And yes, I practiced some in front of the TV! Speaking of music, we went to breakfast this morning and they were playing an Indian-sounding instrumental version of Dido's "White Flag" on a loop. After hearing it for the fourth or so time I wanted to throw something! Oh, and the other day there was a lady in the pool area singing "Smooth Operator" with Indian instruments in the background. Classic.

Oh, and today I saw an infomercial for Proactiv. Apparently it's new in India and it's also really expensive! Rs 2,995 (about $66). Yikes. The spokesperson is Celina Jaitly, a popular actress. I'm trying to learn who the stars are here!

First day

It's about 9am on Sunday and I've been up since 5. This is probably bc I slept almost all day yesterday - I know that's not good when you are trying to adjust time zones, but I was just so exhausted. I really wish I had brought some sleeping pills – ugh.

Anyway, I’ll pick up where I left off w/ the flights. We arrived in Hyderabad a little after 4am on Saturday. It was ridiculously humid when we got off the plane and the airport wasn’t air conditioned, we were sweating our butts off by the time we got thru customs. The airport was really modern and clean at least. It was basically empty in there and I think our flight was the only one that had come through at that point. Our bags came out right away and we headed over to find our driver from the hotel. Luckily we found him very quickly and we headed out toward the exit.

The airport has one of those big arrivals waiting areas, picture international arrivals at Heathrow (like in Love Actually) and everyone’s waiting around to meet people. Even though it was 4am there were a lot of people waiting. And then we walk in.

You’d have thought Brangelina showed up.

Everyone was turning around and staring at us. Not the “I’m kind of curious and will try to casually glance over” kind of look. I mean FULL BODY turn around, blatant stares. I wasn’t that surprised by this, since I was told by many people (and all of the guidebooks) that Americans get a lot of attention/stares, especially if you are a female and have blonde or red hair. It was just kind of weird/creepy to have everyone staring at you (I’m fairly sure someone took a cell phone pic too).

We followed the driver and another guy from the hotel (I think he was the “airport services manager” or something) outside to the car and headed out. Since it was dark out there wasn’t much to see, but we were on a normal highway, not much different from any other country. They drive on the English side of the road here so the steering wheel’s on the right side of the car. The ride went by uneventfully until the highway just kind of ended and then we were on a dirt road. It happened so suddenly we were kind of like huh?? There was no exit or any sort of indication that the highway was ending, we just kind of turned to the right and went on this dirt road and then a minute later we were back on another highway. So random.

A few minutes later we were into the city. Again since it was dark not much to report, the area we drove through was pretty run down, but not Slumdog Millionaire kind of poverty … it was just a crappy neighborhood. There weren’t really lanes of any sort so people just kind of drove where they felt like and we nearly ran over a guy on a scooter…at least there weren’t many cars on the road at 4:30am.

We got to the hotel and there’s a big gate around the complex, you have to go past a guard station to get in. Once they waved us through we went down a long driveway up to another guard station. Four or so guys came around and checked under the car and in the trunk (for bombs). Finally we got to the entrance, which is really nice and has big palm trees out front. A few people came over and took our luggage out and then we went through another interesting security process.

They actually have a baggage scanner thing right outside the front doors of the hotel, like when you go through airport security. So all of our bags went through there while a lady had me go in this outdoor shower looking cube where she proceeded to use a scanning wand thing to check me for metal or bombs or what have you. They did the same to Tim but outside in the open, which I think was interesting. I guess it’s a modesty thing with women?

We walked through a metal detector and then went inside to check in. The staff members all wore cricket jerseys b/c the Cricket World Cup is going on right now. Everyone’s obsessed with it. We watched the Pakistan vs. Sri Lanka game yesterday and I had no clue what was going on but it reminds me a bit of baseball.

Anyway, a mosquito flew around us when we were checking and I freaked out. I’m slightly paranoid about getting malaria or some other disease. Just slightly…

The lobby definitely wasn’t air conditioned (although it was during the day later, maybe they just turn it off in the middle of the night?) and we felt so gross.

By the time we got up to our room it was definitely around 5am and all we wanted to do was shower and go to bed. Our room’s very nice and pretty big but it’s just a normal hotel room (not a suite or anything). We passed out sometime around 6am. I slept til 12:30 but T woke up a lot earlier and ended up unpacking our suitcases and putting everything away.

We decided to go to lunch downstairs in the main lobby restaurant. They had a lunch buffet or you could do a la carte, but we chose the buffet (not knowing how expensive it was). They had mostly Indian food but some other random stuff as well, I ended up trying a few types of chicken but didn’t like any of them so I basically ate some steamed rice, two rolls and a mini BBQ chicken pizza (which was the size of a bagel bite). The bill wound up being $48 so um yeah those were some expensive rolls.

After lunch we wandered around, saw the gym, spa, shops and pool. It was pretty nice out, maybe 83 degrees or so. We were still really out of it so we went back up to the room and watched TV and ended up falling asleep again. We prob would have slept right through dinner but my mom called around 6pm on Skype so we woke up and talked to her, then got dressed for dinner. They have a BBQ every Sat night so I sprayed us down with bug spray in preparation!

We went outside and they had tents set up with tables underneath and lots of citronella around. One of the staff members said we had to go inside to check in at the host desk, where they said the outside seating was all taken (it definitely wasn’t, but maybe they were reserved for others). I was kind of annoyed considering I had taken the time to cover myself in bug spray but then again I was a bit relieved we didn’t have to sit outside w/ the mosquitos. They had the same buffet as lunch only with some more (better) options and you could also go outside and have the BBQ stuff but it was all seafood which I wasn’t gonna eat. Luckily this meal was covered; we can choose from either Saturday BBQ dinner or Sunday brunch each week for free. We found out it was unlimited booze so we both ordered a beer. It was funny b/c the waiter said ok, I’ll get you a beer and walked away. Apparently there wasn’t an option of picking what kind! He brought us back some bottles of Carlsberg, which I’d never had before but it was fine.

T’s coworker had told him about this sushi roll ice cream so we both had some of that. They pour chocolate on an ice block and then it hardens, then they put vanilla ice cream on top of it and any toppings you want. Then they take the end of the chocolate and roll it up and then cut it up so it looks like sushi. SO good!!!

Funny story – we got a bill at the end b/c we had shared some bottled water. Apparently you can drink as many beers as you want and eat anything for free but you have to pay for water! Haha. It was only a few dollars but it was just kinda funny.

We walked around the pool for a while, took some pics and watched a bit of the Cricket World Cup on a big screen they had outside, but the bugs were setting me into panic mode so we went back in. It was a shame b/c the night was so nice (maybe 65ish degrees) or we would have stayed out longer, but the mosquitos were buzzing around us a lot. We watched some more of the game inside and then went to bed around midnight after catching up on FB and stuff. The Internet here is REALLY slow and annoying, by the way. Sometimes it randomly stops working…I have a feeling that I’m not going to be able to use Netflix like I hoped ☹

Anyway I have no idea what we’re going to do today besides maybe go to the gym or the pool. We obviously can’t leave the complex without a driver given the surrounding neighborhood, and honestly, I don’t even think you’re allowed to. There’s nowhere in walking distance to go even if we wanted to go somewhere anyway. We don’t really want to venture out into the other parts of the city (the normal parts and tourist stuff) until T goes to work and talks to people and figures out what is safe, etc. Plus he doesn’t have his local cell phone yet, which we need to call our driver and tell him where/when to get us if we go out. I’m a little antsy to be able to get into a routine and meet some people so I’m not stuck in the hotel 24/7. This first wknd is definitely an adjustment period.

I’m going to attempt to sleep for a bit, which I’m sure won’t work!

Xoxo

Heaven & Hell

So we arrived safely in India, and before I get into what it's like here I have to tell you about the flights. Yes, this warrants an entire blog post. Trust me.

So we get to PHL on Thursday night and the BA checkin lady told us that they only had four empty seats in business class and the only way to get upgraded would be to pay $750 (this wouldn't be for my entire ticket back and forth - just for the flight to London). Since that's a lot of $ just for one leg of the flight, we opted not to, and Tim said I could have his seat in business (his company bought him the business class ticket but since they were so expensive and we had to pay for my ticket out of pocket, we flew me in coach). So the nice lady called over to the first class lounge and told them to let me come in with him. The lounge was pretty sweet, they had all kinds of booze and you could make yourself whatever you want, plus tons of snacks and food. They were serving dinner also but since we already ate and it was like 9pm we didn't have any. Definitely beats waiting at the gate.

Anyway, once on the flight I noticed that there was an empty seat right across from me. We took off and so at this point obviously it wasn't claimed, so I asked the flight attendant if my husband could come sit with me since no one was using it. he starts vigorously shaking his head and says "NO." Ok, whatever. No one is sitting there, so who cares?! Luckily coach was nearly empty so Tim was able to stretch out across three seats and sleep. I watched some TV, part of Harry Potter 5 and fell asleep (the seat reclines all the way to a bed!) for a while. It was sleeper service so they had no food or drinks come by, everyone just slept. I later learned that I was in an old plane b/c Tim's "Club World" seat on the way to India was way nicer than mine was, but more on that later.

So we get to Heathrow at 9something on Friday morning London time. Being my 1st time back in 10 years I was super excited. We had a 3hr or so layover so we stopped and had pastries and something to drink and then walked around and looked at the shops (Gucci, Prada, Burberry...love). Before getting on the flight we stopped at the BA first class lounge and asked about upgrading me to Club World. They said we'd have to buy an entire new ticket which clearly wasn't an option (it was over 1,000 pounds). I was then told I could upgrade to world traveller plus (in between coach and business - much nicer than coach) for 179 pounds. SOLD. Then...oh whoops. Sorry you can't do that to India b/c of tax laws. HUH? We looked online and there were at least 20 empty seats if not more in business class, plus coach was basically sold out, so we thought the chances of me being let up there were much greater than on the way to London at least.

Wrong. Tim asked and they wouldn't let me come up. Even if we paid the ridiculous fee. So I was stuck in coach. With 15 screaming Indian children under the age of three ( I counted) and zero leg room. It wouldn't have felt quite so horrible if I hadn't just flown in a fully reclinable bed in a nice quiet cabin and woke up to breakfast served on real china, I suppose.

In case you're wondering, they cried the ENTIRE 8.5 hour flight. Nonstop. Not all of them at the same time, they were dears and took turns. As soon as the 1 year old sitting across from me would stop screaming bloody murder, the baby in the row across from him would start like "oh ok. my turn." I felt bad for all of the parents b/c they pretty much spent the whole flight walking up and down the aisles trying to quiet the children. I didn't even sleep for 10 minutes. At one point I actually cried right along with them because I was so tired and miserable and my legs hurt from being so cramped, and I just wanted to get off the plane, and realized there was still a good five hours left. Hysterical. At this point I decided I did not care what I had to pay to upgrade on the next flight, there's no way in hell I was flying coach from India to London. In fact I told Tim I would "rather relocate to India permanently than get back on that flight." LOL. Luckily he agreed with this statement so we're going to have to call BA and get my flight situated for the way back to Heathrow next month.

Oh! But I forgot one of the best parts. As I was getting situated in my seat an older couple showed up and said they were in the 2 seats next to me (I was on the aisle). So the man proceeds to yell at me for putting my Vera duffle up in the baggage hold because he wanted to put HIS suitcase up there. So I take it out and say ok put it in, I'll put this on top. He tries to shove it up there but it's just not fitting. The semi cute male English flight attendant comes over and tells him there's no way this is fitting. You have to take it out. They argue for a good 2 minutes or so about this, and meanwhile I'm standing in the aisle while people just keep on shoving through, rolling their bags over my foot, etc. I'm falling backward into peoples seats, ridiculousness all around. Finally the flight attendant gets the bag to fit, helps me put mine in there, and I got to sit down.

This is around the time when the rest of the flight attendants come walking up and down the aisles spraying bug spray. "If it bothers you, please cover your nose and moth with a handkerchief or your shirt." Jenny had told me about this but I totally forgot, so it was pretty amusing/random. There was also a mild scuffle involving the difference btwn a Hindu meal and a Hindu vegetarian meal and the couple next to me...the flight attendant was like "I ASSURE you, we only have veg meals or Hindu meals. And the Hindu meal has chicken." Man next to me: "I believe you're mistaken." And it went on like that for a while. Oy. The flight attendant actually asked me if I was sure I didn't want a drink from the bar - LOL.

About a half hour before we were about to land Tim comes back and says "take your bags, they're letting you come up." Seriously?!!! So I'm allowed to sit with him during landing, but not the rest of the flight? whatever. I took what I could get and relaxed in the totally silent Club World cabin til we landed. Oh and the ENTIRE section of World Traveller plus (the section just above coach that they wouldnt let us pay 179 pounds for) was empty. Totally empty. Awesomeness.

We're getting ready for dinner so I'll update later on everything else!

And we're off...

I figured it was easier for everyone to keep up with our trip this way, so welcome to my travel blog :)

We're leaving in about an hour and I'm starting to freak out! Everything's packed, and we're just chatting with our families and stuff before we go have dinner with T's Mom and head to the airport. I'm really nervous about having to take the anti-malaria medication. We got "the good kind" (no hallucinations!) but I'm still a little worried about the side effects, especially since the first dose will be tonight at dinner. If it makes us sick we'll be kind of screwed since we have to get on the plane right after. Ugh. Cross your fingers that everything goes well with that!

We arrive in London tomorrow morning, have a three-hour layover and then head to Hyderabad from there. We finally get to Hyderabad at 4:30am (India time) on Sat. I'll try to update once we get to the hotel on Saturday, but I'll prob be exhausted.
